As far back as I can remember I have been working with the human figure.  In my childhood/adolescence I was constantly making what I called fashion drawings. In late high school and college my focus was on the study of psychology.  There was so much to explore in the understanding of why humans did what they did.  Later I began working with sculptural figures in clay while studying ceramics in Venezuela.  Upon my return to the US I studied figure drawing at The Art Students League of New York.  Later I began working with kiln-formed glass, incorporating the figure into kiln-formed panels.  And then I began painting under the tutelage of  Beverly Ryan at The Art League of Alexandria Virginia.

Last year (2020) I had a solo show of work about body shaming and the impact it has on all of us.  My Body Shamed was shown at the Art League Gallery in August. One of my paintings created during the Covid pandemic was juried into The Phillips Collection's show "Inside Outside Upside Down" and is on display from July 17 to September 12.

Barbara Muth is best known for her figurative works painted in bright colors that often belie the tension and emotions present among the figures in her paintings. Working primarily from the model, Muth allows their pose to communicate to her the emotions present. Drawing on her education and training in psychology and her instinctive sense of color she develops her works. Layers of colors peeking through the details in the paintings allude to the layers of experience and emotions that people often hide from others. Muth’s aim is for viewers to recognize the experiences and emotions portrayed in the works and thereby find a pathway to healing. Largely self-taught as an artist, Muth finds inspiration in the works of Henri Matisse, Milton Avery and Sean Scully.

My inspiration starts with the paintings and sculptures that filled my parent's home.  They taught me that the appreciation of art was essential to living life fully.  The life I lived in Venezuela filled my soul with the colors you see in my paintings.  Four of the artists whose work pushes me to go further, deeper, to explore not only the visual landscape, but also the emotional, are: Henri Matisse for his emphasis on color over form, Milton Avery for the way he reduces the canvas to the essential forms, Sean Scully for the layers of color and meaning in his paintings and photographs, and finally Niki de Ste Phalle for her exploration and celebration of womens' bodies and sexuality in her work.
